The facility will cater to the new born infants and teenagers to access for treatment of kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostrate, genitalia and stone disorders.
According to Dr. LN Raju, chief urologist and head, Paediatric Urology Super Speciality Unit RG Stone Urology Centre, the new department is created to keep pace with the rapidly expanding field. Parents want their kids to be treated by the best specialists.
"Urologists handling adult patients need to be ahead in the areas of drugs and techniques. Therefore, we looked at a separate wing to handle children whose tissues are soft. The disorders are different from adult urological conditions because it mostly congenital. The way these kids respond to medicines and surgery is also different to adults," said Dr B S Bansal, chairman, RG Stone.
The key objective for a Paediatric Urologist is to perform a surgery only when absolutely required. Some of the diseases which were operated earlier on are now managed with drugs. We are also looking at best long-term results with shorter and less painful hospitalization, he added.
