Ruby Hall Clinic has launched a state of the art Neuro Trauma Unit and Stroke Unit with Emergency Medical ambulance service having full-fledged life saving equipment on board. The units and services were inaugurated by Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar. Speaking on the occasion Pawar said, "Considering the alarming rise in the road accidents such trauma unit and emergency is a boon for the city. In Maharashtra alone 7800 people die annually due to lack of timely medical aid."

The total investment earmarked for the project is Rs. 2.5 crore of which around Rs. 1.5 crore has been invested till now. The Neuro Trauma Unit has been started in collaboration with Rotary Club of Birmingham, West Midlands Ambulance Service, Asian Health Forum, Royal Life Saving Society, UK and Rashtriya Life Saving Society.

Delving on the Neuro Trauma Unit, Dr. Sanjay Vohra, Director of Neurosurgery and Trauma Unit said, "The Unit is a dedicated 18 bed unit with each bed a special trauma bed having central oxygen supply, air supply, central suctioning and continuous monitoring with specific intracranial monitoring facility for patient." Vohra further explained that a well-trained ambulance response team would accompany the ambulance and start treatment on site and transfer the patient to the Neuro-Trauma Unit.

A team of six nurses and two doctors has already returned from the West Midland in UK where they were trained and now they will train their colleagues in Pune. Initially Ruby Hall will launch five ambulances that will have a digital map of the city to help them reach the accident site in the shortest possible time.

"All ambulances will co-ordinate and communicate with the consultant of the trauma unit during the transfer. An operation theatre totally capable of managing multi-trauma patients with 24 hours of radiological and blood bank services is attached to the trauma unit," said Vohra. Disaster management, community education, emergency medical services and trauma centre, he said, support the whole concept of Neuro Trauma Unit.

Soon, two-wheeler rapid response team would also be developed to reach all corners of the city considering the city's congested traffic. According to Vhora the city needs atleast 30 such ambulances. He further added that the first hour, also called the golden hour of the accident is the most crucial for the patients.
