A team comprising 14 orthopaedic consultants from prominent hospitals of South East Asia were given training for Articular Surface Replacement (ASR) by Dr. Kaushal Malhan, a Joint Replacement and Resurfacing specialist of Wockhardt Bone and Joint Hospital, Mulund. The team was showcased the Live ASR surgery at Wockhardt Bone and Joint Hospital auditorium, Mulund.

Dr. Malhan, says, "Surface Replacement Arthroplasty which is also known as Hip Resurfacing is a bone conserving Hip surgery that allows a normal lifestyle to patients of end stage hip joint disease. The hip joint may need to be replaced with an artificial joint when it gets badly and irreversibly damaged."

ASR or Hip Resurfacing involves replacing only the diseased bone. Preservation of bone at the time of operation and less stress shielding makes it easy to revise this if needed. The large size provides a very stale joint and close to normal hips sensation. This technique addresses almost all the problems that a conventional Hip replacement creates. "The procedure of Surface Replacement Arthroplasty (ASR) or Hip resurfacing countries to be a winner. This is a technique especially suits Indian patients suffering from Hip disease. I hope a lot more surgeons will gradually be able to do this surgery and help patients," says Dr. Malhan.
