Sakra World Hospital offers AS technology to ‘Young Arthritic Knee’ condition
Sakra World Hospital has addressed the challenge of a young arthritic knee condition affecting patients under 60 years of age with a new Gold Standard solution called ‘AS technology’ which enables leading a normal life for the next 30 to 35 years.
The technology introduced by Sakra is for the first time in Karnataka and was used on a 49 year old patient who was diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis.
The orthopedic team at Sakra World Hospital evaluated several treatment options including bone conserving procedures like knee resurfacing, osteotomy, half knee replacement and realised that these may at best be a stop gap arrangement and need for knee replacement will definitely be there after few years. Thus the team concluded that a definitive solution is knee replacement through ‘AS technology’, which is considered a gold standard solution offering great advantage to young patients.
According to Dr. Chandrashekar P, Consultant, Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement, Sakra World Hospital each knee is special and in Young Arthritic Knee it is a must to customise each case and treat accordingly as the decision between bone conserving and bone replacement options needs to be taken after meticulous examination.
”In this case we opted for Columbus AS Knee as it is the only implant offering a life of 30 35 years and owing to its multilayered coating (7-layered). The technical specialties of this implant include hardness, less wear resistant, tested for allergy, scratch proof under abrasive conditions, he added.
The while the general notion is that Arthritis affects only older people, increasing evidence reflects that there is alarming rise of this condition in young patients including some below the age of 30! Another uneasy fact is that nearly two-thirds of people with arthritis are less than 65 years of age, said Dr. Raajiv Singhal, chief executive officer, Sakra World Hospital.
With incidence of Young Arthritic Knee increasing and also total knee replacement becoming a must, ‘AS technology’ by default becomes an ideal implant for patients. In-addition to offering other advantages this implant is a boon for patient having history of allergy to metals. This innovative technology owing to its versatility and adaptability is likely to revolutionise knee replacement surgeries in the future, he said.
