Shoulder and Elbow Society of India organised its 3rd Biennial Conference cum workshop highlighting the theme “Improving Surgical Skills” at Indian Institute of Mass Communication, JNU, New Delhi.

The objective of the conference was to raise awareness on prevention, early diagnosis, and risks associated with neglecting problems of shoulder and elbow. Also, the conference proved as a platform for surgeons to share information stemming from recent research, and train others surgeons.

The conference cum workshop acted as a perfect knowledge retreat for doctors from all over India to get tips on the art of shoulder replacement, though an established operation abroad, but relatively new in India. Other workshops included shoulder arthroscopy (key-hole surgery), and elbow trauma. For dedicated trauma surgeons, there was a special hands-on teaching straight from the experienced surgeons of United Kingdom.

The format of the conference was revolutionary in the sense that there were few lectures. The two day intensely interactive conference covered shoulder and elbow topics through surgical videos, panel discussions and current concept reviews.  It focussed on teaching younger surgeons, the modern techniques of shoulder and elbow surgery.

Dr. J.Maheshwari, senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research, New Delhi, says “Established surgeons will find this event most relevant as they will be exposed to a lot of new technology being used in this field. Over 100 high caliber surgeons all over India and abroad world will be there at the event.”

Many renowned doctors and delegates were there to take a deep understanding on the new techniques for shoulder and elbow surgeries.

"This is a platform where east and west meets. Doctors from all over the world have flown to India to attend this interactive conference. I am so glad that I am a part of this unique sessions,” said Dr. Deepti Nandan Reddy, senior orthopaedic surgeon, Continental Hospital, Hyderabad.

Doctors from smaller cities were there to grasp the knowledge from the experienced doctors and introduce latest techniques in their hospitals. Dr. Naveen Sharma from Mewar Hospital,Jaipur said, " This session has been by far the most knowledgable session I have ever been to. This is not only beneficial for doctors but also for the patients who have been suffering from these injuries since long time."The prominent surgeons and panellists who attended the conference included J.Maheshwari, Knee & Shoulder surgeon, SitaramBhartia Institute, New Delhi; Shashank Misra; Shoulder Specialist, Sir Ganga Ram hospital, New Delhi; Sanjay Desai from Jaslok Hospital Mumbai, and Ashish Babhulkar from Pune, among others.
