SkinMedica Inc has launched its first pharmaceutical product, EpiQuin Micro, for the treatment of melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The product is a unique formulation of hydroquinone 4% and retinol entrapped in Microsponge technology. The Microsponge technology provides gradual release of the active ingredient into the skin. The powerful vitamin C and vitamin E antioxidants are incorporated to enhance the health and appearance of aging skin. In related matter, SkinMedica entered into an agreement with Cardinal Health to supply EpiQuin Micro.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, melasma is a common skin disorder that affects approximately five to six million patients a year in the United States. The condition is common during pregnancy and its symptoms include a darkening of the facial skin in the areas of the nose, cheeks, lip, chin and other areas frequently exposed to sunlight. The condition is caused by over-active melanocytes, or pigment producing cells, that when stimulated, form unwanted melanin and patchy discoloration.

"In recent patient studies we have seen that the formulation and Microsponge release of EpiQuin Micro reduces irritation and enhances efficacy," stated Pearl Grimes, Director, Pigmentation and Vitiligo Institute. "One of the most encouraging findings from the study of the product is that we are seeing significant results in four weeks, with continued improvement over time."

SkinMedica also markets a line of cosmeceutical products that include TNS Recovery Complex, a biotechnology-derived product to help enhance the health and appearance of aging skin and the SkinMedica Vitamin C Complex and Retinol Complex among others. For patients seeking a preventative skin care regimen, the company also offers the Vitalize Skin Care System to help minimize future skin damage.
