To reduce the recovery time for the jawans, The Military Hospital at Khadki is all set to introduce spine stabilizing system' shortly in order to reduce recovery time for jawans. This is a new technique of spinal fixation for paraplegic and tetraplegic army jawans for a fast recovery.

The old Harrington system will now be replaced by the new technique. Commenting on the new technique, Col. K.R.Salgotra, Senior Advisor (surgery and orthopaedics) said, "The technique involves fixation of spine using titanium screws and plates anteriorly and screw and rods posteriorly. The technique will reduce the rehabilitation time to 4-6 weeks as compared to earlier of 6-12 weeks.'' The rehabilitation time depends on the severity of the injury, too, added he. After the rehabilitation, the soldiers are taken to Queens Mary Technical Institute for making them self-dependent and exposing them to various courses.

The centre is the largest orthopaedic and spinal cord injury centre in South-East Asia and has also been the pioneer in the joint replacement centre of the Indian Army. The centre specializes in management of orthopaedic trauma and spinal injuries. Till date over 15,00 soldiers and their dependents have been rehabilitated.

In near future, the hospital has various upgradation plans, too, pointed out Salgotra. Very shortly, on March 8 and 9, Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme would be held on newer trends in anthroplasty and trauma care. "It will be a national level programme where all the medical experts from all over India would participate,'' said Salgotra.
