With the state government sanctioning Rs 50 lakh, the Andhra Pradesh Drugs Control Administration (APDCA) is all set to strengthen its vigilance on drugs retail trade in the state. There would be more number of 'surprise checks' and inspections on drugs trade in future.

'The state government has provided Rs 50 lakh for this year so that more surprise checks and inspections can be conducted. The amount will be used for hiring vehicles as well as meeting other requirements for conducting 'surprise checks', a highly placed officer told Pharmabiz.

The administration is also trying to create a computer database of all the transactions (issue of manufacturing license) that took place at the APDCA so as the maintain transparency in the overall functioning. The office is waiting for financial approval from the government to acquire computers, logistics and hiring manpower to start the work.

The database would have all the information with respect to the manufacturing licenses issued, name of product, date, patent details, the party involved and other important data that could be utilised as reference for future approvals. 'This would help avoid duplication product as well as the brand name by other manufacturer. We have submitted a proposal of Rs 3 lakh for the project,' the officer said.

When asked about the man power, he said, 'though the minister has assured that new drug inspectors would be recruited, the move has not made any progress. We are hopeful that it will also be considered soon.'

According to the officer, last year the department submitted a proposal to the government for using transport vehicles on rent, acquiring mobile phones for drug inspectors, as well as meeting other expenditure. The total proposal is for Rs 1429.23 lakh for upgrading the entire administration.
