Talks between the striking medicos in Tamil Nadu and the Tamil Nadu government has failed. The Tamil Nadu government had invited the representatives of the striking medicos to come to the negotiating table on May 3, and the same happened. However, the adamant stand of the representatives of the striking medicos saw the failure of the talks as they alleged that the state government had not done much in regards to the demands of the medicos.
The striking medicos have been demanding the following – Medical Council of India recognition to 79 medical and dental courses conducted at the government medical and dental colleges, increase in stipend, reduction in fees and non –approval to private, self financing medical and dental colleges in the state.
Though the state government, through the Health Minister, S.Semmalai, clarified that it was taking efforts to see that the demands of the striking medicos were met, the latter claimed that the assurance of the government was not enough. They wanted concrete steps in this regard at the earliest, without giving the government time to do so.
The state government claimed that the demand for increase in stipend and reduction in fees could be looked into it further added that it would take appropriate steps in seeking the Medical Council of India's recognition to the 79 courses. However, it added that the approval to private, self financing medical and dental colleges was done by the Medical Council of India and that the state government had no role in the same.
The state government has asked the striking medicos to come for talks once again but there has been no response from the striking medicos.
