Telstar, a multinational group based in Spain that develops high-technology solutions for the life sciences market, has entered into the field of ultra-low-freezing by developing its own technology for cold storage applications. The company, with almost 50 years of experience in low-temperature applications, developed in-house a new cold storage technology for laboratory and research fields.

Telstar cold storage technology has been applied to a new line of innovative equipment focused on efficient and safe sample storage in the laboratory and research process. The new line of Telstar Igloo ultra-low-freezers ranges from low temperature range -45°C to ultra low temperature range -86°C.

Under the green line concept, the new Telstar Igloo ultra-low-freezer offers -86°C temperature and provides an innovative and energy efficient storage system, superior temperature performance and uniformity. It also offers the lowest power consumption and low noise level (< 50 dB(A)) in a small footprint, which enables a more optimized freezer layout and the flexibility to adapt to any space.

Ultra-low-freezers in both -86ºC and -45ºC temperature configurations include Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIP). The freezers offer outstanding storage efficiency in vials per m2 to save on valuable lab space. The combination of low power consumption, the lowest noise level and the standard use of ecological, green refrigerants makes it the most environmental friendly ULT freezer range. Reliable storage for valuable samples is safeguarded with help of a high capacity cooling system. All of this is controlled and monitored at eye-level by the most complete, self-diagnostic control system. As a standard, internal materials are stainless steel. This includes inner walls, shelves and even the inner doors. The Telstar freezer range offers both upright and chest types with capacities from 370 up to 830 liters.

This entry into the world of ecological and green ultra-freezing further expands Telstar’s offering of process solutions for biopharmaceutical laboratories and research centres through its own clean air, freeze-drying, containment, cell culture and, now, cold storage technologies. Telstar invests 3 per cent of its turnover in research, development and innovation of its technologies and equipment.

Telstar today  is one of the world’s top five manufacturers of biosafety cabinets and one of the top 3 manufacturers of laboratory freeze dryers.  The company holds 15% of the world market share in biosafety cabinets for laboratories and 70% of the market share in Spain.

Recently, Telstar has introduced into the international market the first minibioreactors that enable multiple simultaneous cell culture trials.  The innovative minibioreactor model is directed at animal cell culture screening studies on a scale applicable to R&D.

Headquartered in Terrassa (Barcelona), Telstar operates in over a hundred countries and has 8 production plants, 10 technology centres and 12 consulting and engineering services centres, and commercial offices all over the world. It has manufacturing plants in Spain, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Germany and Estonia.
