TN Drug Control cancels license of medical store for selling expired drug

The directorate of drugs control department in Tamil Nadu has cancelled the sales licence of Chithra Medicals at Pulianthopu in Chennai following the death of a child who had consumed date expired drugs allegedly supplied by the medical store last month.

It was learnt that the medical store sold Ziprax 50 mg, an antibiotic which had passed the expiry date.

The death of the child has caused violent incidents in the locality and the drug regulators have conducted a massive raid in almost all the medical shops in the area and registered 12 cases.

While interacting with Pharmabiz, Director of Drugs Control Department M Bhaskaran said on the very day itself Chithra Medicals was given a show cause notice and the assistant drugs controller in charge of zone-2, C Bangaru Raju, cancelled the sales licence on January 5.

In the raid, the agency has confiscated large quantities of expired drugs from several drugs stores in Perambur and Pulianthopu areas. Besides finding expired drugs, the agency found other contraventions such as sales without giving bills, non-maintenance of records and operating the pharmacy without pharmacists.
