TN government's TAMPCOL launches seven herbal drugs

The Tamil Nadu Medicinal Plant Farms and Herbal Medicine Corporation Ltd. (TAMPCOL), a Tamil Nadu government promoted herbal medicine manufacturing and marketing firm, has launched six new Unani drugs and a herbal tooth powder.

According to sources with TAMPCOL, the products are an anti-obesity capsule Slim & Trim, Cough Syrup, an appetizer Dawa-Ul-Meda, Peptic Care to cure gastric and duodenal ulcers, Digelax digestive tablet and Ayurveda based memory booster Vallarin Memory Capsules, besides a Unani herbal tooth powder. The products are being test marketed, and was soft-launched a few days ago, said sources.

Sources said obesity or increase in body weight beyond limitation of skeletal and physical requirements is manly due to excessive deposition or distribution of fat, collagen or extra cellular fluid in the body, and Slim and Trim has ingredients to get rid of the excess fat. Cough Syrup, helpful to control all types of productive cough, is a Unani proprietary medicine manufactured in accordance to the ancient literature Baiyaz-e-Kabir. It soothes the stimulated mucosa of the throat and controls cough effectively, reduces phlegm, facilitates better breathing and promotes expectoration. Unlike many other cough syrups, the drug has been found to keep the patient comfortably alert without any sedative effect.

The herbal tooth powder, also manufactured in accordance to Baiyaz-e-Kabir, removes yellow coating and dirt on the tooth. It also gives strength to the teeth and gums.

Sources said the TAMPCOL Dawa - Ul - Mewa appetizer, now introduced as a Unani proprietary medicine, was being used for the past 35 years in the Unani Department, Anna Hospital of Indian Medicine, Chennai, and its benefits have been described in Pharmacopoeia of Hospital of Integrated medicine. Similarly, Peptic Care, indicated for treating various gastric and duodenal disorders associated with gastric and duodenal ulcers, was in use for the past several years in the Chennai Anna Hospital of Indian Medicine. Digilax, indicated for treating various gastric disorders associated with excessive gas formation, is also prepared according to ancient texts and its properties have been described in the National formulary of Unani medicine, said sources.

TAMPCOL, started in 1983 with the objective of cultivation of medicinal plants and to develop herbal medicines, currently manufactures and markets about 62 Unani, Ayurveda, Siddha and Homeopathy drugs. Tampcol has medicinal Farms in Chennai and Kolli Hills to supply the raw material and have factories at Chennai and Alathur. TAMPCOL Herbal Hair Tonic, very popular in Tamil Nadu, is claimed to have 28 herbal ingredients.
