The Indian Pharmaceutical Association (Tamil Nadu Branch) had organized Sri. N. P. Mathur memorial lecture meeting on June 4, 2003, at Chennai. A. Krishna Dev, President, IPA, TN branch presided over the function. Dr.M.Ravichandran, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Pharmaceutics, JSS College of Pharmacy,Ooty, spoke on "Bioequivalence Evaluation In Human Subjects - The Present Scenario".

While detailing the ADME process of drug action, Dr.Ravichandran illustrated that all equi-strength formulations may not show similar systemic availability. The physicochemical factors, dosage form factors and bi ological factors which influence bioinequivalence were clearly dealt with by the speaker. While explaining the historical perspective of bioavailability and bioeqivalence in pharmaceutical dosage forms, the role of excipients on bioavailability of drugs in formulations was explained.

Dr.Ravichandran explained in detail as to how pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, clinical and in vitro studies can be used to measure and document bioavailability and bioequivalence of drugs.

Dr.M.Vasudevan, Asst.Professor, Dept of Pharmaceutical Analysis, JSS College of Pharmacy, Ooty delivered a lecture on "Perspectives In Bioanalytical Method Development & Validation". Dr. M. Vasudevan explained the various steps that are involved in estimation of drugs in biological fluids (Blood, Urine, Saliva). Preliminary treatment of the medium chosen, extraction of drugs and metabolites, Assay of drugs and their metabolites were exhaustively detailed by the speaker. While describing method development, method validation and method transfer, significance of DQ, IQ, OQ & PQ were explained. Dr. M. Vasudevan stated that the equipment used should be of appropriate design, adequate capacity and should be properly maintained.

The meeting sponsored by M/s.Tamil Nadu Pharmaceutical Sciences Welfare Trust, Chennai, was well attended by the members. S.Lakshminarayanan, Secretary, TN IPA, proposed the vote of thanks.
