The Chennai based medical technology company Trivitron Healthcare has introduced South Asia's first Digital Mammography Machine with prone table stereo tactic biopsy system in a city based breast cancer treating centre. The machine Lorad Selenia was imported to Chennai Breast Centre (CBC) by Trivitron from Hologic Inc, USA.

While speaking in the installation ceremony, Dr G S K Velu, managing director of the company said that mammographic examination may make the difference between life and death for a woman. Its success in detecting breast cancer early is known to be improved by technical and interpretative excellence. Unlike currently used analog mammography machine which uses film as both receptor and a display for the image to produce static, fixed images, the Digital Mammography uses detectors that changes X-rays into electrical signal, and finally an image that can be displayed on monitor or printed on a high-resolution laser printer, he said.

"As part of our commitment to bring world class medical technology at affordable cost in India and other emerging markets, we are proud to be the first in south Asia to bring this system to Chennai Breast Centre which will facilitate early and accurate diagnosis for women suffering from breast cancer". Dr Velu said.

According to him, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and there are over 80,000 new breast cancer cases detected every year in India. It is estimated that one out of every 20 urban women and one out of every 50 rural women are diagnosed with this disease. Timely detection, experienced evaluation and a multimodality approach to treatment by specialists continue to be the best chances for cure of this disease.

Dr Selvi Radhakrishnan, the Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon of CBC said digital mammography with prone table stereo tactic biopsy system is the first of its kind in South Asia. It uses Suros Atec Vacuum assisted biopsy device with no detectable scar under local anaesthesia to provide accurate diagnosis and thus better chances of treatment and survival. She said her hospital has tied up with other hospitals, Indian Medical Associations and Gynaecologists Associations to benefit the use of this advanced technology to all the women in the society.

The chief guest in the function, M Kanimozhi MP praised Trivitron in bringing the best medical technology to the country. She hoped that the launch of the machine would help early detection of breast cancer and save lives of women suffering from this deadly disease.
