Trouble brewing over sports quota in NTR University of Health Sciences
Trouble seems to be brewing in the NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) over the process of scrutinising sports certificates of 62 candidates seeking admission in medicine under sports quota. A panel of the NTRUHS is entrusted with the job of processing and scrutinising the sports certificates submitted by the aspirants.
Official sources here said the government is seized of the matter. The government, if necessary, may order an inquiry.
Suspicions have arisen following the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) pointing the "needle of suspicion" but failed to specifically name any aspirant as "fake certificate holder." The SAAP panel has thrown the ball into the NTRUHS court to identify if any "fake" certificates were presented. However, the usage "needle of suspicion" employed by the SAAP has triggered suspicions over the selection process.
The NTRUHS is an autonomous university in Vijayawada, exclusively meant for administering the medical course and medical colleges in the State. It has been established way back in 1984.
There are 14 seats in medicine and two in BDS. They are distributed among the three regions in the State. Coastal Andhra has five, Telangana six and Rayalaseema three. Of them, three are reserved for Scheduled Castes and two for Backward Classes.
Meanwhile, representatives of various sports associations represented to the State that the NTRUHS had reduced the sports quota from 0.5% to 0.25%, and thus reducing the number of seats for sports. The Central government guidelines specify that 1% quota should be given to meritorious sportspersons. NTRUHS has violated the government order, they said.
