The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has awarded a new patent (US Patent No. 8,227,453) for Emotional Brain’s methods for the treatment of women suffering from female sexual dysfunction (FSD). In view of the importance of proper protection, the award of this patent in the United States is an absolute milestone in the development of this drug, and for Emotional Brain in general.

FSD is a widespread condition that many physicians consider an unmet medical need. There is no FDA-approved medicine available yet for this particular indication area. As a result, American physicians annually prescribe millions of off-label drugs for the treatment of FSD. Due to the lack of options to regulate and control off-label prescribing (and the potential safety issues this may entail), the FDA is eager to have an effective and safe medicine for the treatment of FSD approved fast. This opens up a tremendous window of opportunity for the introduction of the drugs currently under development by Emotional Brain.

Patent protection is of crucial importance to the medicines Emotional Brain currently has under development. Dr Adriaan Tuiten, PhD, CEO of Emotional Brain, explains: ‘It ensures protection of our medical applications and medical procedures aimed at the treatment of female sexual dysfunction. The issuance of new patents in a country such as the United States is tremendously important and has a huge impact.’

The award of this new patent removes one of the final barriers for Emotional Brain to press forward, after completion of the phase 3 studies, to a successful market introduction of its therapeutic products, as well as to closing a pharmaceutical deal of tremendous global proportions.

Emotional Brain, based in Almere, the Netherlands, is a pharmaceutical company dedicated to the development of therapeutic products for the treatment of female sexual dysfunction (FSD).
