VES College of Pharmacy, Mumbai, part of Vivekanand Education Society, conducted a day long seminar on “Nano Technology – New Perspectives on Drug Delivery Systems” at its campus on Saturday.

Organised by Department of Pharmaceutics, VES College of Pharmacy, the seminar had resource persons from industry as well as academia. The scientific session was meant for students of Department of Pharmaceutics.

Dr. Mangal Nagarsenkar, Professor and Head of Department, Pharmaceutics, Bombay college of Pharmacy, held a session on Lipid vesicular nanocarriers for overcoming the barriers.

Dr. Vandana Patravale, Professor Pharmaceutics, Institute of Chemical Techology, Matunga, talked about Lipid-based Nanoparticulate Systems.

The presentation by Dr. Hitesh Doshi, managing director, Indeus Life Sciences, covered the need to develop technologies suited to large-scale manufacturing of nanoformulations. It discusses importance of nanofornmulations in decreasing dose and toxicity of drug. It includes challenges faced by the formulator to prove superiority of nanoformulations over the conventional products available market.

Maneesha Patil, new product development manager, formulation R & D, Perrigo Laboratories, India Private Limited gave a general introduction about nanocrystals which includes need, benefit and different types of nanocrystals. She also covered general information from FDA regarding growing interest shown by FDA. This is followed by a general product development cycle through which a generic development passes for a formulation development of nanocrystals.

The seminar was attended by more than hundred delegates including students, research scholars, academia and formulation scientist from industries.

There was also a poster presentation where students presented their research work and other aspects in nanotechnology.

Dr. Rajashree Hirlekar, Professor, Pharmaceutics, and coordinator of the seminar, said that the purpose of the seminar was to stress the importance of nanotechnology and various avenues of application of this technology. Other aim was to provide opportunity to research scholars for interaction with academia and industry.

Dr. Supriya Shidhaye, convener and principal of college, said the seminar aimed at balancing the innovative research outcomes of academia with practical business outlook of industry in the field of nanotechnology. We also wished to emphasize the need of multidisciplinary research thorough collaborations.

B L Boolaniji, senior most trustee of VES said that developing  the research culture and  making home-grown scientists is the need of hour and he would always wish that a pharmacy program focuses on  innovative  research for better healthcare.
