Wockhardt Hospital, Mira road, has started its first epilepsy centre within the hospital on the occasion of first International Epilepsy Day declared by International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) and The International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) on 9th February 2015. This world day for epilepsy is a major step in improving epilepsy awareness in every region of the world, and will also highlight the urgent need for increased research into epilepsy.
Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder and affects people of all ages and is commonly referred as "seizure disorders." Epilepsy is a spectrum condition with a wide range of seizure types and control varying from person-to-person characterized by unpredictable seizures and manifests into other health problems.
The centre was inaugurated by Chief Guest Fr. Bonaventure from Our Lady of Sea Church, Uttan along with the 88 year old Yoga Guru Shri Yogirajji. In this centre a Special Epilepsy Force has been kept on 24/7 duty for the management of both the child and adult epilepsy.
Ravi Hirwani, Centre Head, Wockhardt Hospital, Mira Road on this occasion said, "We are proud to announce the opening of our epilepsy centre. On the occasion he highlighted it would be the first comprehensive epilepsy centre between Dahisar to Vapi for the treatment of epilepsy. We are happy to start this centre so as to provide and meet the needs of the epileptics and cure them in comprehensive facility available at Wockhardt Hospital, Mira Road a step further. He also added yoga to the treatment of epilepsy so as to keep patients healthy & away from the effects. & early disorder.”
In India there are more than one crore epileptics who suffer from epilepsy. Out of this hardly 50 lakhs epileptics are treated. However, more than 15 lakh remain resistant to medical treatment making it a worst case scenario for them. In Mumbai, where the population is dense and people suffer multiple diseases, epilepsy is taking roots. There are hardly few centres to treat Epilepsy as modern machineries required for the treatment are quite costly and not many hospitals can afford. It leaves no choice for the people but to suffer from it.
Dr Mohnish Bhatjiwale, Neurosurgeon at Wockhardt Hospital, said, “One in 100 to 200 people in a general population has epilepsy at any given time. About 50 to 70% patients develop epilepsy before the age of 18 years. It is hard to say who will suffer but with our epilepsy centre, we are confident that we can help the epileptics by treating them.”
Speaking at the occasion, Dr Khaniyalal Trivedi, neurologist & epitologist at Wockhardt Hospital said epilepsy can happen to anyone at anytime. It is necessary to get it treated instead of letting it take over us. Having a centre now with modern and state of the art facilities people can get treated and live a normal life.
