Hyderabad-based Yashoda Hospitals in collaboration with ICPS, Paris is organizing the first Indo-French Transradial Workshop in the city on March 20 and 21. A high level Angioplasty Stent workshop will be organized by a team comprising cardiologists from France and India. Dr Yves Louvard, senior interventional cardiologist will be leading the French cardiologists and Dr C Raghu, chief interventional cardiologist, Yashoda Hospitals would be leading the Indian cardiologists.

The event aims at sharing ideas, experiences and expertise between the cardiologists of both the countries. About 30 angioplasty procedures will be demonstrated during the workshop, which will be performed with the help of three flat panel cath labs, recently acquired by Yashoda. And the patients can undergo angioplasties at a very nominal cost.

Angiography and Angioplasty procedures are normally done through artery of the thigh (femoral artery). Though the technique of radial artery (through the wrist) has been in practice for a decade, it has gained popularity only during the last two years, Dr Raghu said. In France, in 1998, about 10 per cent of angioplasty cases were dealt with transradial procedure and in the same country, now, the procedures are in use for about 54 per cent of the cases, which indicates a four fold increase in usage of this procedure. Till now, about 2.5 lakh cases had been performed in the world through it, he added.

The radial technique is found to be more suitable and comfortable to the patients. Currently, these procedures are said to be done at very few centers in the world, and Yashoda claims it to be one among them. The hospital has done more than 1000 cases in the last one year through this technique, and the success rate is about 99 per cent, it claims.

About 200-300 cardiologists from all over the country and from neighbouring countries like Bangladesh and Nepal are likely to attend the workshop. And the workshop is going to be an annual feature from now onwards, Dr GS Rao, executive director, Yashoda Hospital said.

The workshop will cover areas and issues such as prevention of radial artery spasm, Indian experience in transradial procedures, choice of hardware for transradial procedures, transradial approach in complex subsets, modification of transradial techniques in Indian cath labs, transradial non-coronary interventions, anatomic difficulties in transradial procedures, future of transradial procedures etc.

The faculty includes Dr Abhaichand Rajpal (Coimbatore), Dr Balram Bhargav (New Delhi), Dr SK Chugh (New Delhi), Dr KK Haridas (Cochin), DR PK Jaiswal (Patiala), Dr Rajendra Kumar Jain (Hyderabad), Dr. Pramod Kumar (New Delhi), Dr Ajit Mullasari (Chennai), Dr CVR Prasad (Hyd.), Dr Vidyasagar Rao (Hyd.), Dr D Seshagiri Rao (Hyd.), Dr M Srinivas Rao (Hyd.), Dr PC Rath (Hyd.), Dr G Ramesh (Hyd.), Dr Prasad Reddy (Hyd.), Dr Rahman Sufia (Dhaka), Dr Sanjay Shah (Ahmedabad), Dr Madukar Shahi (New Delhi), Dr Rajesh Shetty (Pune), Dr Shailender Singh (Hyd.) and Dr HS Somnath (Hyd.).

The organizers are making efforts to include diverse subsets of patients for live cases to demonstrate the versatility of the transradial procedures. The workshop will be inaugurated by Surjit Singh Barnala, the Governor of Andhra Pradesh on March 20.
