Dr B S Singhal, director, Department of Neurology, Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences, Bombay Hospital and Medical Research Centre, Mumbai has bagged 27th R D Birla National Award for his work in India on multiple sclerosis, megalencephalic leukodystrophy, Myelopathy associated with Eales’ disease and Myasthenia Gravis.
The award was presented by Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
Under the support of the Bombay Hospital Trust, the R D Birla Smarak Kosh, has instituted annual awards for excellence in Biomedical Sciences and Modern Medicine.
Justice P N Bhagwati, former Chief Justice, Supreme Court of India has selected Dr Singhal and presented him a cheque of Rs. 5 lakhs for his collaborative research activities in the fields of multiple sclerosis and stroke.
Dr Singhal has been a recognized postgraduate teacher for DM Neurology of Bombay University and was an examiner for DM neurology for several universities in India and for the National Board, New Delhi. He has been organising ‘Neurology Updates’ (continuing medical education programmes) by inviting leading experts in neurology from overseas for the benefit of neurologists from India and neighboring countries.
Dr Singhal was President of the Indian Epilepsy Association (2002) and President of the Indian Epilepsy Society (2003). He is also a member of the American Academy of Neurology, American Neurological Association, Association of British Neurologists, French Neurological Society and Movement Disorder Society (MDS).
Dr Singhal has worked on several Research Committees of WFN (World Federation of Neurology) viz. research groups on organisation of delivery of neurological services, tropical neurology and neuroepidemiology.
He is a Founder Fellow of the Indian Academy of Neurology, Association of Physicians of India, International Medical Science Academy and Indian College of Physicians. He has been on the Editorial Board of Neurology India, Annals of Indian Academy of Neurology and is a member of the International Advisory Committee of the Archives of Neurology.
He has received several prestigious awards including Dr B C Roy National Award for development of Neurology in India, Priyadarshini Academy National Award for outstanding contribution in the field of Medicine, and the Wockhardt Award for Medical Excellence in Neurology [organised by the Harvard Medical International], Dhanvantri award.
