JSS University has collaborated with international universities like Howard, USA, Khan Kaen Thailand and La Trobe, Australia to undertake joint research on tropical diseases and ascertain the varieties of flora in the tribal region of the Niligiri hills which helps to prevent lifestyle disorders like diabetes and hypertension.

The research is driven by the findings that the tribal population of the Nilgiri hills are found not to have reported incidences of hypertension and diabetes. The University is now keen to take this observation forward and research on the food habits of the tribal population in the region who are known to mainly consume edible roots, herbs and plants of medicinal value.

“Our collaborations with international universities has a dual focus. One is for a student exchange agreement. The second is to help both JSS and international academia to partner and pursue research to develop novel drug molecules for the existing and new diseases,” Dr PA Kushalappa, director, Academics JSS University, Mysore told Pharmabiz.

“In this regard, we are working with La Trobe, Australia to assess the efficacy of tribal flora which helps to prevent lifestyle disorders particularly  diabetes and hypertension. Further, we are looking to undertake research on drugs and understand the reason for certain diseases in specific populations like for instance obesity, cancer, genetic disorders,” he added.

In partnership with John Hopkins Bloomberg, a School of Public Health established at the JSS campus in Mysore the faculty and research groups collaborate on select research interests. Under the student exchange programme, tropical diseases of India including malaria and diarrhea are studied by teams from John Hopkins. The JSS students are in the US to ascertain the modes of disease prevention.

“Such collaborations benefit both India and the world. Our country is home to tropical diseases for which drugs are found wanting. The scope for joint research in pharmaco-epidemiology is vast. The team of faculty and students from international academia with those from JSS would help comprehend the shortage of drugs for many illness. Discovery of drug molecules requires inclusive involvement of pharmacy students and faculty. Since JSS University is recognised for its professional and academic excellence such international collaborations would only accelerate sound research to develop possible efficacious drugs and treatment modalities”, said Dr Kushalappa.

In the last couple of years, JSS University has made significant progress in several of the areas that needed attention including the introduction of new and innovative programmes, capacity building, international collaborations, nurturing research culture, infrastructural upgradation, and financial sustainability; promote continuing education and faculty development programmes, he said.
