Karnataka is reported to be indicating high incidence of life style disorders which comes under the category of DALY ( Disability-Adjusted Life Year). The state is also estimated to spend Rs.431.9 crore in treatments of NCD's whereas for communicable diseases it will be Rs.154.1.crore.
According to the state directorate of health and family welfare there is a rising trend in the these conditions and patient population in the state across urban and rural areas are seen to be spending more on treatment to control these conditions. It has also mooted preventive health check camps to catch the condition early.
Indian preventive health care market is estimated at Rs.4000 crore and expected to grow to Rs.50,000 crore in next 5-6 years.
The burden of non-communicable diseases has been increasing day by day on the Indian economy. It is projected that NCDs would account for 62 per cent of DALY losses in India by 2020 and fatality from NCD in urban India would rise by 42 per cent by 2021. NCDs are expected to cost India income losses of $236 billion by 2015, which is almost 39 per cent of total health expenditure. Even Karnataka too would face the economic burden.
“We do see an increasing trend of lifestyle diseases in south India. Sedentary lifestyle, wrong eating habits, desk jobs, lack of exercise, alcohol consumption, increasing stress levels and high coconut and starch intake are some of the basic reasons resulting in higher numbers of CVDs in Bengaluru,” Amol Naikawadi, joint managing director Indus Health Plus told Pharmabiz.
“However, since it's evident that lifestyle diseases are taking toll across India, it is our endeavor to make our preventive healthcare services available, affordable and accessible. Moreover Bengaluru is an IT hub and most of the population here are also from the young generation. Their long working hours and poor lifestyle management are strong reasons for increasing numbers”., he added.
There is also an increase in the incidence of oral cancer reported in 45 per cent of all cancers in males and breast cancer emergence in 56 per cent of all cancers in women from Bengaluru. Now this is a clear indication.
“Now in order to control the rise of NCDs, there is need to ensure that the population opt for preventive health checkup and that is what we have to spread across regions. Our specially designed health checkup package is a solution to know your health statistics at an early stage'”, said Naikawadi.
The Indian healthcare sector is gradually moving towards preventive healthcare from curative healthcare. The corporate sector will play a critical role in driving growth in the preventive healthcare market. Many companies have mandated regular health-checks and drive several wellness programmes to ensure a productive and healthy work-force. The challenge is to convince a supposedly fit person to visit a hospital for a health checkup, said Naikawadi.
