KEM Hospital plans to set up day care facility for haemophilia patients
The department of haematology in KEM Hospital, Mumbai is planning to set up a day care facility to provide proper care to haemophilia patients as there is a paucity of space in the department. The demand has already been put forward to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the facility in the same premises of the hospital.
“We are planning to have a dedicated day care facilities for the patient because the number of patients is increasing day by day and we are having a space problem. We have submitted the proposal to the BMC, they are acting on it and hopefully we will be having the day care facility soon.” says Dr Chandrakala S, head of department of haematology, KEM Hospital.
Explaining the need behind the demand for day care facility in the haematology department of KEM Hospital, Dr Chandrakala says “Haemophiliacs go through severe pain and in some serious cases there is bleeding in brain and joints. In our department, we don't have sufficient space where the patient can take rest and go through physiotherapy. we have to treat the patients in the wards. Most of the time the patients come, take clotting factors and go in a severe pain as there is no place for them to rest. If we have a day care facility the patient can lay down, take rest after taking clotting factors.”
Haemophilia is a genetic disorder in which the patient do not bleed more profusely or faster than others. Instead, they bleed for longer periods of time than someone without haemophilia after getting a cut or bleed internally. Internal bleeding is usually into joints and muscles, but can also occur in the brain or other organs.
Males are the sufferers of this disease and females are only the carriers. The cause of haemophilia is the inability of the body to produce the anti-haemophilic factor (AHF) in the required quantity.
