As part of expansion of its portfolio of radiology accessories, Kiran Medical Systems (KMS), a division of Trivitron Healthcare is set to launch a slew of new products including a full body radiation shield, mobile X-ray, analog and digital mammography systems over the next couple of years.

The full body radiation shield will be launched by KMS over next couple of months. The product has been designed specifically for interventional cardiologists and radiologists performing a number of procedures a day. By using the full body shield, they don't need to wear heavy apron. A light weight apron along with the radiation shield will take weight off their shoulder and hip joints, said Satyaki Banerjee, president of Kiran Medical Systems.

Mobile X-ray, analog and digital mammography systems will be the next offering of KMS. Mobile X-ray, a compact form allows easy X-ray imaging near bedside, in ICU, operating rooms, etc. without moving the patient. The mobile X-ray to be launched in three variants-- 3.5 kW, 10 kW, 20 kW will be working with single phase power input. 10 kW, 20 kW mobile X-ray variants will be offered in analog and digital format. In middle of fiscal 2017-18, KMS will launch analog mammography system along with digital mammography system. Digital mammography will be 2D scanning mammography. In fiscal 2018-19, KMS will introduce advanced mammography system with tomosynthesis capability, informed Banerjee.

Trivitron has a total of nine manufacturing plants.  KMS earmarks 6-7 per cent of annual turnover to drive R&D of radiology products. Its manufacturing facilities are approved by US-FDA, SGS-UK and PMDA-Japan amongst others.

Globally radiography product market driven by digital direct radiography is expected to grow 6-6.3 per cent CAGR by 2020-21. KMS is introducing direct radiography products globally and is expected to achieve around 15-20 per cent growth per annum, he opined.

Sharing perspective on imaging and diagnostic market in India, he said “Total X-ray installation in the country stands at 1,00,000 to 1,25,000. 3,500 X-ray machines are added to the installation base every year. Of 3500 X-ray machines, 30-35 per cent are high frequency machines. There is a significant shift from analog to digital radiography which comprises of computed radiography and direct radiography. Out of the total radiography installations in India, 30-40 per cent have moved to computed radiography from analog radiography. As of now direct radiography comprises of 2.5-3 per cent of the total installed base.”

KMS portfolio of radiology products includes Ultisys range of radiography products available in 32 kW to 82 kW, the Infinity and Elite series surgical C-Arm systems available in 3.5kW and 5.0kW power output and the option of 1Kx1K digital imaging chain with advanced image processing capabilities; a comprehensive range of radiation protection products, anti-scatter x-ray grids and imaging accessories including computed radiography systems, dry films for DICOM printers, screen films, analogue cassettes and screens.
