Manipal University is conducting the 4th annual conference of the Society for Mitochondrial Research and Medicine India between December 8 and 9, 2014. The event will be held at the Chaitya Hall, Fortune Inn Valley View, Manipal University Campus. The theme of the event is 'Mitochondirial Biology: From Molecules to Disease'.

Mitochondrial diseases are mutation related disorders of the muscles, brain and nerves. It causes conditions like optic neuropathy, multiple sclerosis leading to loss of muscle coordination, muscle weakness, visual problems, hearing problems, learning disabilities, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory disorders, neurological problems, autonomic dysfunction and dementia.

The objective of the event is to provide a common platform to the basic scientists and clinicians to discuss on the recent advances in mitochondrial biology, diagnosis and treatment of related diseases.

The event is also open to post graduates and PhD students according to the organizers, Society for Mitochondria Research and Medicine-India and the School of Life Sciences, Manipal University.

The patron for the event is Dr. Ramdas M. Pai, President, Manipal University. The advisory committee includes Dr. H. S. Ballal, Pro Chancellor; Dr. K. Ramnarayan, Vice Chancellor; Dr. H. Vinod Bhat, Pro Vice Chancellor; Dr. Surendra Shetty, Pro Vice Chancellor; and Dr. G. K. Prabhu, Registrar (all from Manipal University).

The speakers are representing US, European Union and India. The  confirmed speakers from the US are S. Bae from Alabama, B. Cohen from  Ohio, M. Davidson from  New York, S. P. R. Rao, California, K. K. Singh and KP Singh from  Alabama, S. Ghosh, New York and S. Mishra, Winnipeg, Canada.

Two speakers from Europe are J. Finsterer, Vienna, Austria and F. Otto, Kassel, Germany.

The panel of experts who would deliberate from India would be  S. Banerjee, Kolkata, A. Bhardwaj, New Delhi, N. Gayathri, Bengaluru, M. Khullar, Chandigarh N. B. V. Sepuri, Hyderabad, K. Satyamoorthy, Manipal, L. Singh, Hyderabad, P. Sundaresan, Madurai, and K. Thangaraj, Hyderabad.
