Osmania Medical College may be granted 50 more MBBS seats from the coming academic year 2013-14. Medical Council of India (MCI) already visited Hyderabad to inspect Osmania Medical College whether the state government provided the required infrastructure to accommodate 50 more students in the college.

Currently there are 200 MBBS seats in Osmania Medical College. As the demand for admission into MBBS seats in Osmania Medical College is increasing every year, the state government had been asking the MCI to increase at least 50 more medical seats during the past few years. Last year MCI had increased MBBS seats in Rayalaseema and Andhra Medical colleges but had not considered the proposal for Osmania University citing inadequate infrastructure.

Last year when the MCI denied allocation of extra MBBS seats, it received a lot of criticism from students and Telangana protagonists saying the MCI is biased and working against the interest of Telangana educational institution on the behest of some of the Andhra, Rayalaseema politicians. But the MCI had clarified that it could not allocate more seats due to inadequate infrastructure, which has to be fulfilled by the state government.

As per the MCI’s requirement, the state government provided the necessary infrastructure in Osmania Medical College and its affiliate hospitals. The officials also inspected the Niloufer Children Hospital and a detailed scrutiny of all the medical personnel, doctors, surgeons and nursing staff was done.

Medical education director, Vishnu Prasad said, “Earlier objections were raised with regard to the civil and medical facilities and now we have rectified all those objections and hopefully we will have 50 more seats to our existing lot of 200 MBBS seats from the next academic year.”

Prior to the visit of the MCI officials the director had visited the Medical College and the Osmania General hospitals to reconfirm that everything is in place before the actual inspections by the MCI officials took place.
