With the commencement of Mahaveer Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) in the newly formed Vikarabad district in Telangana, the state will add 150 more seats to its existing quota of 2,100 medical seats in private colleges. However, this year about six new medical colleges were approved with about a total of 600 MBBS seats which will make the total tally of private quota seats to 2,700.
In the government sector, the Medical Council of India (MCI) had approved 250 seats to two new government medical colleges one in Mahabubnagar and the other one at Sanathnagar in Hyderabad. Overall, Telangana state will have a total combined seat count both in private and government medical colleges to 3,800.
Moving in the direction to meet the demand for medical courses and at the same time with an objective to serve the poor patients in the rural areas, MIMS commenced MBBS education with 150 seats to begin with. Dr. Laxma Reddy, Minister for Medical Health and Family Welfare inaugurated the college and called for all the private medical colleges to conduct regular health camps as part of their social responsibility. “All private medical colleges must come on a platform to conduct free medical and health camps in rural areas to serve the rural poor.
