Green corridors by police in Vishakhapatnam and Hyderabad made it possible for a team of doctors at Global Hospital and Care Hospital in Telangana to perform a liver and kidney transplant to save lives of two people in the respective hospitals.

Realizing the importance of speedy and safer transportation of donated organs from one hospital to the other and from one place to other, the police in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam played a key role in creating green corridors giving free way for ambulance in the heavy traffic and helped save the life of two people.

“Transplanting the donated organ to the recipient in time is very important. In this case, the role of police in the state is commendable. Once the organ was recovered, the Vishakhapatnam police department created a green corridor for the organ to be transported to the airport in the quickest time possible and with the help of able staff from Indigo Airlines, we were able to get the organ to Hyderabad quickly,” Dr. Hirendranath, vice president, Medical Services & Operations, Global Hospitals.

According to hospital sources, a 53-year-old farmer named Satyanarayana who met with an accident was declared brain dead at Seven Hills Hospital in Vishakhapatnam had helped save a 63-year-old person’s life in Hyderabad.

“The Andhra Pradesh unit of Jeevandan informed us about the availability of a cadaver liver and immediately a team of doctors from Global Hospitals went to Seven Hills Hospital and started the retrieval of the organ,” said Dr Hirendranath.

The retrieval process started at 3.30 a.m. this morning after which it was airlifted from Vishakhapatnam to Hyderabad. Dr Mathew Jacob, Senior Consultant, Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery lead the team of doctors that was responsible for the retrieval of the organ.

After touchdown at the Hyderabad International Airport, the airline staff immediately offloaded the organ into the waiting ambulance and with the help of the green corridor created by the Hyderabad police the organ was able to reach the hospital in 20 minutes.

The team of doctors lead by Dr Tom Cherian, Chief of Surgery & Head, Dept. of Liver & Pancreatic Surgery & Transplantation, Global Hospital and Dr. Balbir Singh, Senior Liver Transplant Surgeon at Global Hospital have successfully transplanted the organ after an eight-hour surgery to a 63-year-old retired engineer from Hyderabad.
