With both state and central governments taking positive initiatives, the bulk drug industry in Telangana is expected to get a new boost soon.  As already announced, the state government of Telangana has almost completed the draft new policy for pharma and bulk drug sector and it is also planning to build a Pharma City on the outskirts of Hyderabad for which the survey conducted by Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC) has also come to a final stage.

Adding momentum to this effort of the state government, the central government’s announcement to unveil a new bulk drug policy in March this year to encourage active pharmaceutical ingredients manufacturers in the country has also given confidence among the industry leaders that Telangana and Hyderabad in particular will soon open another era for the bulk drug industry to excel in the country.

“We have almost completed the survey for the Pharma City to be established over an area of 11,000 acres at Mucherla 70 kilometers away from Hyderabad in Ranga Reddy district. We are in the process of preparing a detailed project report (DPR) in coordination with the pharma industry and the pollution control board so that every ingredient required for the industry and environment safety is incorporated,” said a senior official in the TSIIC.

As part of its new initiatives, the state government is coming up with a global ultra-modern technology at the Pharma city in the state. More so, the state government’s initiatives have got a shot in the arm with the central government’s Make in India programme, which is aimed at encouraging entrepreneurs to manufacture APIs in the country.

“With the ‘make in India policy’ of the government, we are expecting encouraging sops like tax breaks, weighted tax deduction at 150 per cent for R&D expenditure and availability of affordable land for the industry,” says a member of BDMA.

Currently Hyderabad has a strong base for bulk drug industries in India contributing one third of country’s bulk drug production. Taking this further to the next level, the Telangana state government has planned the Hyderabad Pharma city and attracting new investors in the bulk drug and formulations segment. “The pharma city is definitely a good initiative by the state government. This is going to attract new investors and give a new boost to the existing ones,” said an industry expert.
