The Telangana state government has decided to set up an advanced ‘Smart Health City’ in Bibinagar of Nalgonda district on the outskirts of Hyderabad. For this, Chief Minister of Telangana, K. Chandrashekhar Rao has allocated about 400 acres of land and has decided to house an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at the earlier proposed site of NIMS (Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences) at Bibinagar.

To this effect, the Chief Minister has already directed the officials to prepare a comprehensive project report for establishing advanced ‘smart healthcare city’, wherein it will house world class Medical and healthcare infrastructure, like a medical college, super specialty hospitals, research centers and diagnostic labs, which will cater to advanced and international standard medical and healthcare services to the people.

During the earlier government in 2009, about Rs.90 crore were allocated to build NIMS like institute over a spread of 165 acres at Bibinagar. But, except for the building, the then government failed to allocate any funds for other internal infrastructure facilities like labs, diagnostic equipments, etc, because of which the facilities were just left unused since past 6 years.

But now with the central government decision to set up an AIIMS institute in Telangana, as part of its promise in the state bifurcation bill, the CM wants to cash in on the opportunity and has proactively come forward to allocate 200 acres of land exclusive for AIIMS. For this the central government is expected to release Rs.820 crore for the proposed project at the earliest.

Since the Telangana State government has already announced big ambitious healthcare initiatives to set up at least one superspecialty hospital in each district of the state, this proactive move by the government is considered to be the first step towards realising the big dreams of healthcare infrastructure in the state.

For building the smart health city, the state government is expected to bear all the cost of constructing roads, quarters for medical professionals, schools, colleges and will allocate remaining 200 acres for the required necessary facilities, like building pharmacy college, Nursing college, Medical stores, Hospitals etc, informed Dr. Rajaiah, Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister of Telangana.
