The Telangana state government is planning to build a network of 4 most advanced multispecialty hospitals with a capacity of 750 beds each around Hyderabad. As part of this plan, the health ministry of Telangana has already directed the Telangana State Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation (TSMSIDC) to prepare a detailed proposal for the same.

According to sources from the health department in the state, at present, only two old hospitals of Osmania and Gandhi government general hospitals are serving multispecialty healthcare services to the general public in and around Hyderabad.

However, since these hospitals were constructed way back during Nizam era, they are not able to accommodate the heavy rush of patients coming to these hospitals every day.  For instance, the Osmania Hospital was built more than 100 years back with an initial capacity of 200 beds, but over the period of time its capacity has gradually increased to its saturation level of 1,100 beds. Similarly, the Gandhi government general hospital was constructed 60 years ago and this hospital too has its capacity up to 1,100 beds. Both these hospitals are medical college hospitals and combine can handle only 2,200 patients every day. But still it is not enough; both these hospitals have a combined foot fall of 3000 to 4000 patients every day.

“Considering the heavy patient load on these two hospitals, the state government has though it necessary to have 4 such advanced hospital network around the city of Hyderabad, so that the patent traffic coming from the districts can be diverted to the network hospitals and thereby can reduce the heavy load on these two hospitals in the city. As part of this, we have already issued a direction to the TSMSIDC to prepare a detailed draft proposal and submit it to the government,” informed Rajeshwar Tiwari, Principal Secretary Department of Medical Health and Family Welfare.

The proposed 4 new network hospitals around Hyderabad will have a dedicated 250 beds for women & child and maternity care. “This is a good idea of the state government to come up with such a plan of setting up multi specialty government hospitals around Hyderabad. As already the patients in Gandhi and Osmania are forced to wait for months together for diagnostic tests and surgeries, the new hospitals will definitely reduce the patient load and help improve the quality of services,” said Dr. Bhaskar, a Medical PG serving at Gandhi.

The four new hospitals are expected to come up inside the Outer Ring Road near junctions connecting Hyderabad-Warangal, Hyderabad-Nizamabad, Hyderabad-Vijayawada and Hyderabad-Mahabubnagar national highways. For this the government has already earmarked land at four places and is planning to raise funds of Rs.1,500 crore from banks. It has targeted to complete atleast 2 hospitals by end of 2018.
