Telangana health dept recalls 8 drugs from 2 hospitals after 5 maternal deaths

After 5 maternal deaths recorded at Nilofer and Modern Maternity Hospital at Pitlaburj in Hyderabad, the state government had decided to recall 8 important drugs supplied by 3 pharma companies and replaced the same with drugs manufactured by other companies.

Soon after the deaths reported at these maternity hospitals in Hyderabad, the health department of Telangana directed the Telangana State Medical Infrastructure Development Corporation to recall 8 medicines which include Antibiotics, diuretics and some other intra-venous fluids manufactured by three companies.

According to officials’ sources, though an inquiry has been launched to identify the details of cause of deaths, as a precautionary measure, the government had asked the TSMSIDC to recall 8 types of medicines from all the government hospitals and replace it with other brands.

It is learnt that the higher officials who are looking into the death of 5 pregnant women with complications during deliveries, are trying to identify the reasons that led to complications and checking if it may have caused by dextrose with sodium chloride injection. However, so far the officials have not clearly come out with a final conclusion and till now no action has been taken on any of the companies supplied  these medicines. “As a precautionary measure, the TSMSIDC has issued instruction to all the healthcare institutions to urgently recall list of 8 medicines. This has been intimated to all government hospitals in a letter,” informed a Senior Official in the healthcare department.

The orders have been passed to all the executive engineers and pharmacists of Central Medicine Stores (CMS), to recall all the 8 listed medicines with immediate effect. The list of drugs that are recalled include dextrose with sodium chloride injection, ciprofoxacin injection IP 200 mg/100ml, mannitol 20 per cent IV infusion IP 100ml metronidazole IV Infusion IP 500 mg and four other IV infusion fluids have been asked to recall.
