Karnataka to receive 600 cr World Bank aid to improve health centres

Karnataka will receive a World Bank aid of Rs 600 crore for the development and improvement of infrastructure of the 243 small-medium sized medical centres and 2,565 primary health centres spread over 27 districts of the state. The initial amount of the funds is expected to be released by end of 2004.

Karnataka is the only state found eligible for the loan which is now in its pre-appraisal stage and there are several hurdles to be crossed before the amount is released, Dr. S Subramanya, secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka told Pharmabiz.com

The World Bank will also fund waste management, software components and contracting out various health care services. It would also support training of doctors, paramedics and nurses. The amount will also be used for the regular availability of drugs supplies, acquiring equipment and timely repair of equipment.
