Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad, has got the approval of the Medical Council of India(MCI) to start the Doctorate in Endocrinology from the next academic year. The course is the first of its kind in the entire South. Only six medical colleges in the country in Chandigarh, Delhi, Mumbai, Meerut, Lucknow and Benarus offer the course.

According to Dr G Chandrasekhar Reddy, professor and HOD of Endocrinology in Osmania, "There is not a single medical college in South India which offers doctorate in Endocrinology. There are 65 qualified Endocrinologists in India and the highest number, around 14, is from the state. The need for Endocrinology specialists is greatly felt in the south since the rate of increase in diabetes is high here."
