Sri Ramachandra Medical College (SRMC) has undertaken to provide emergency medical care at the newly set up emergency medicare centre at the Chennai Central Railway station. The centre is the first of its kind in the southern region and has been set up to provide immediate medical care to passengers, more so in case of cardiac and such emergency problems.
The centre is a two storey building with state-of-the art facilities which has been set up with an estimated cost of Rs.30 lakh. The SRMC centre will provide services free of cost in emergency situations while nominal charges would be collected for non emergency services including diagnostic procedures like ECG, testing for blood pressure and sugar to name a few.
In addition to the functioning as a first aid centre, it will also be a centre where immediate acute care for all medical emergencies would be provided. A well equipped ambulance has been on a stand by to transport critically ill patients to the SRMC. The centre is also equipped with an Automatic External Defibrillation Unit (AED) so as to provide medical care in case of disorders caused due to a disturbed heart rhythm.
Healthcare professionals from SRMC will provide care at the centre, paramedics specially trained in basic life support services and emergency procedures at the SRMC will man the centre. At any given point of time, one doctor and three paramedics will be in attendance, according to Vijayalakshmi Kamath, Director, SRMC.
